Individuals Coming Off Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
