Shifting from Praise to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Release is Divided.

Right-leaning reactions to the limited release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.

Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter outlining the redaction procedure.

Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections

While the former president's name and image appear in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans immediately called for greater transparency.

“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly does not comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he continued.

Some Rightwing Figures Swing Behind the Release

However, a segment of conservative pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their identities obscured.

But some do not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, enabled certain rightwing voices to go on the offensive.

“This is quite rich how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“New documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Former President Campaign Releases Statement

Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding those files for months only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a statement.

“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.

Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued

Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that came before the congressional approval to pass a bill requiring the documents' publication.

The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy binders of files that included little new information.
